The sandblasted glass pieces in these portfolios are shown in several formats: small bevelled glass ornaments which can hang in windows year-round, catching the sun and throwing rainbows; solid glass slabs with images of nature and spiritual symbols such as Celtic knots; and multi-layer glass framed in mahogany.
The multiple levels of the framed works allow me to link different images into a whole. I often put together images from nature with images of the sacred, because it is in nature that I am most aware of the sacred. Many of these pieces include Celtic knots, because they symbolize eternity and the union of heaven and earth. Several pieces explore the cycles of life, death, regeneration and rebirth with images of seedpods, a lake with the bare trees of winter, a nest of bones, an aging athlete, and a child securely nestled in his father's hands, the shape of which echoes the tree roots that surround them. There is an image of ancient cave paintings combined with cathedral arches, because both represent sacred places. There is one example of architectural glass, an arched window in a door, with the image of a tree surrounded by the lives it touches.
Some of the glass is sandblasted with hand-cut masks: other masks are made photographically from drawings or photographs that I have done. All are original. Most are about 12 inches by 15 inches, by 2 1/2 inches in depth; some are a bit larger.
