Barbara Ball: Sandblasted Glass (right brain)
Working in glass is what I love. It's where I find freedom - places where images stand separate from words.
— Barbara Ball
If illustration is Barbara Ball's profession, sandblasted glass is her passion. Having worked with stained glass panels, Barbara began experimenting with sandblasted glass in the early 1980s. Since then, she has focused exclusively on sandblasted glass, playing with light and the ways it's transmuted through glass. Her recent work juxtaposes disparate images - both representational and abstract - in several layers, inviting viewers to explore new and interesting connections.
Barbara's glass work has been sold in a number of galleries and festivals throughout the South. Her commissions include 24" x 40" multi-layer scene of the Franklin (Tenn.) City Square, depicting a Civil War statue and County Courthouse, which was presented to a retiring City Manager. She also was commissioned to create a chapel window at Episcopal Place, an assisted living facility in Birmingham, Ala., and a window at St. Augustine's Episcopal Chapel in Nashville, Tenn.
A native of Alabama, Barbara has a BFA from Auburn University. She lives in Nashville with her husband, Steve Newman, who makes the frames and boxes that hold her glass.
